Not much to say about this day… we started in North Platte, worked our way to Wakenney, Kansas through the afternoon and when there was no sign that western Kansas would go before dark, we opted to head back up to I-80 to set up for the following day in Iowa. Fortunately for us as we approached York, a cluster of sub-severe cells fired along the KS/NE border moving north/northeast and boy were they electric. It ended up being my best night of lightning photography in four years. We stopped twice, once on the west side of Lincoln and once at the Greenwood exit for about 40 minutes in total as the cells were moving fast, but were pumping out CGs at a rate of 5-10 per minute, so it was easy shooting, and the lightning was amazing. To the naked eye, a flash would look like one big bolt, but when the picture showed up on the camera, it was 3, 4, even 5 bolts. Given the fast nature of the storms, meaning the off-and-on rain that would come over us, I didn’t set up multiple cameras (my only regret), so the hardest part was choosing a direction to aim. Regardless, I was THRILLED with the results. Saved what was otherwise a busted trip (we botched the next day in Iowa).
