Not much to speak of about this day’s chase… I was “suffering” a pretty hefty tornado hangover after yesterday’s magic, and with a shorter leash as I had to be home early enough the following day, I was playing the target of convenience in eastern Nebraska over the much better play further north into the Dakotas and Minnesota.
Departing in the morning, I headed up into central, and eventually northern Nebraska on a marginal supercell. I bounced between two cells, the second one up near Newport on US-20 providing the best look and even a little hail. Nothing too exciting, but it was something to kill an afternoon.

I didn’t make a huge effort out of this day, and when things up north starting popping off, I knew pretty quick I wasn’t going to make much out of this day. I hauled back down to Norfolk for an early dinner as a couple marginal storms moved overhead. Fortunately, I timed my meal out well to catch a brilliant rainbow/sunset on the east side of the city.

I opted for an overnight stay in Omaha, but the storms that I drove through that provided the nice sunset were also cranking out some amazing lightning. I figured if I could get on the other side of the river and set up in Iowa with the Omaha skyline in the foreground to capture some amazing CG action. I found a spot with a great view, the lightning was cranking, and I was ready to go…
But Mother Nature is camera-shy… and I’m not lying, literally the SECOND I had everything set up and started hitting the shutter, she went silent. I literally took over 200 photos, and not ONE SINGLE CG. Below are the only three I ever got proof there was lightning in. At least the skyline looked good.
Nothing else exciting to note… got up early and made the drive home Wednesday. Obviously a VERY well worth it trip thanks to Carpenter, so anything out of this chase was just a little icing on the monster cake.
